Yes, you can get Comcast separately. However, you should get your own rates, locally, for where you live! The easiest way is to call your local Comcast office. I don't know why you would want others on this forum to guess for you. Comcast will even mail you a brochure setting out all the different packages and the costs – something you can show daddy.

I've had DirectTV twice, and Time Warner Cable twice. I considered Dish Network, but if you look on resolved questions on Yahoo Answers, there's a lot of complaints about Dish, so I avoided them for that reason.
DirectTV has always been great. The customer service is decent, they tend to be a bit cheaper than cable, and I've had fewer service problems with them.
Time Warner was horrible, it would take an hour for them to get to your call, the service was always going out, and even when they came out to fix it (3 days after our call), half the time, it would fail again an hour after the tech left.
TIVO and DVR are the same thing. DVR is what it is (Digital Video Recorder) and TIVO is one of the many brands of that. Basically it's like a VCR but all digital, so you can record shows if you won't be home to watch them later, you can pause a show live if you need to use the bathroom, and if you recorded a show earlier, you can fast forward through the commercials. Very handy!
If you get a DVR that comes with your cable package, the main cable remote should work it with regular buttons like play, pause, FF & Rewind. The programming to record future shows is pretty easy too as I recall.

OMG..Verizon FIOS is SO much better. I would never go back to Comcast. The internet speed is incredible. Probably 10 times faster than Cable. Clean signals. Lots of channels. Battery backup on FIOS also. This would allow you to use the phone, (regular plugin, not cordless) and Internet with a laptop. Never had a problem in over a year now. Excellent customer service. There is a lot more space with FIOS for more channels, and less compression.

The startup costs would be PHENOMENAL. The local cable companies own the cable that runs from the office to each home. They lease space on the poles from the local phone company. All of that infrastructure is already in place. For a startup to try to break into that market, they would have to lay their OWN cable network, and probably on their own poles as the phone company won't want to get in the middle of the battle between their current lease customers and the newcomer. Getting permission to erect a whole new set of phone poles to run the new cables would be daunting at best. So, the local cable companies do constitute a de facto monopoly, which is why they are so heavily regulated.
